ADAPTIVE REUSE | PHX UNION STATION

Union Station aims to establish relationships between people and the surrounding Phoenix community through the interweaving of green spaces, educational programs, and mass transit. Phoenix Union Station was once a gateway to the city, and in the spirit of adaptive reuse, it will be restored into a hub for the public transit systems as well as a community center. The land forms guide users, just like a river, through the outdoor programming, ultimately leading them to the community center. These additive measures were taken in order to preserve the original character of both existing buildings. The push and pull of the facade system mimic horizontal ribs that passively shade the buildings. Through a system of synergies between ground and building, ecologies start to emerge, connecting this historical site with a new narrative.
